Chess Sea Games 2022 started in Vietnam

Read Time:2 Minute, 25 Second

Chess sea games started today with classical category. In the men section, Malaysia is represented IM Yeoh Li Tian and FM Lye Lik Zhang while for women we are represented by WIM Puteri Munajjah and WFM Tan Li Ting. Main focus isĀ  on our national number 1 player who is a gold medalist in the previous Sea Games in Philippine in 2019 although in term of rating he is seeded number three in the group as two player from the host country (which is a chess powerhouse) outranked him.

First day started with mixed result. In the women section our ladies meet each other and after 19 moves they both settle for a draw. In the men section, Lye Lik Zhang lost to the more experienced GM Priasmoro. In another board, Yeoh Li Tian faced the upcoming IM Daniel Quizon. Even though black seem to have slight advantage in the game (double bishop, connected pawn majority on the flank), white seem to be holding off just fine and as we going towards the end game, it seem drawish. But at a crucial junction, white unable to respond precisely and the mistake allow black king to penetrate white section and Li Tian get the full point from his first game after grinding it out.
